Lot Essay

These silhouettes, or scherenschnitte, were made to be placed in front of a candle in order to show the artist's skill and dexterity which are comparable to similar works by Philipp Otto Runge (see J. Traeger, Philipp Otto Runge, Munich, 1975, illus. p. 100).

There are several other examples by Menzel in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.
