Lot Essay

The subject was first treated by Wopfner in 1880, depicting nuns returning to their cloister on the island Frauenchiemsee, Chiemsee, near Munich. The subject matter was popularised by the painter Christian Ruben and a poem was dedicated to his painting by Victor von Scheffel.

Wopfner's Ave Maria also became popular and he received many commissions to repeat it.
