This portrait was painted at a critical time for Nolde. In 1909 and 1910 his style evolved from his own brand of impressionism to a more expressionistic style.

This picture hails from a series of portraits painted in 1910 of peasants and inhabitants of Friesland and was one of five portraits exhibited in the Kunstverein, Jena in 1911, for which the asking price at that time was 800Mark. Of this exhibition, the famous art critic Botho Graef wrote, "Endlich sind noch fnf Porträtköpfe da.
