Between 1923 and 1930 Kokoschka visited eleven different European countries and also explored North Africa and the Middle East. In 1930 alone we know he visited Algeria, Italy, Switzerland, and Paris. He rarely drew at this time, relying on his swift painting technique to capture a scene, be it a landscape or a portrait. It was in the second half of July that Kokoschka travelled from Rome to Anticoli, a small village in the Sabine mountains which had become something of an artist's colony. For a short period of time he painted works such as Frau mit Frchtekorb which reflected the rustic environment of the mountain villages.
