Lot Essay

Maximilian II Franz (1756-1801), Archduke of Austria, last Elector Archbishop of Cologne and Prince Elector of Münster, 16th and youngest child of Empress Maria-Theresia (see lot 22). He entered the Order of the Teutonic Knights in 1769 and succeeded his uncle Karl Alexander, Duke of Lorraine as a Hoch-und Deutschmeister of the Order in 1780. A sponsor of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, he ruled in Bonn and Münster from 1784 until he had to emigrate after the invasion of his countries by the French Revolutionary troops.
