Prince Karl (1795-1875), son of King Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria and his consort Princess Auguste Wilhelmine of Hessen-Darmstadt. Younger brother of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, he married first Sophie von Bayersdorf (d. 1838), and secondly Henriette von Frankenburg. Prince Karl is remembered particularly for his excellent command during the Battle of Königgrätz in 1866. Another version of this portrait from the same year is illustrated in G. Biermann and Brinckmann, Die Miniaturensammlung Seiner Königlichen Hoheit des Großherzogs Ernst-Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein, Leipzig, 1917, pl. 144, no. 451.
