Lot Essay

Ferdinand Philippe Louis, Duc d'Orléans, eldest son of Louis-Philippe, King of the French (see following lot) and his wife Marie-Amélie, née Princess of the Two Sicilies (see lot 110). He married in 1837, the year of this portrait, Hélène, Princess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Five years later, he died in a carriage accident.
Lizinka de Mirbel exhibited a miniature of the Duc d'Orléans in the Paris Salon of 1838 which may well be the present miniature. On the death of the Duke in 1842, she received several Royal commissions for posthumous portraits after the present miniature.
