Lot Essay

Qur'ans written with 5 lines to the page (rather than 11 or 13) are slightly more common among those of Iraqi or Persian origin, than of Egyptian. However Mamluk and Il-Khanid examples can be found, both in gold and black script, although rosette verse markers are slightly more frequent among Mamluk Qur'ans. Examples with rope-pattern borders are known in Cairo, including that written for Baybars in 1304-6 (James, D.: Qurans of the Mamluks, London 1988, cat.nos 1, 32 and 34) as well as further east (Ibid, cat.nos 42, 49, 52 and 57).
