A TINNED BRONZE INKWELL
KHORASSAN, CIRCA 1200

Of cylindrical form, the flat circular cover with central dome, the sides engraved with three arched panels each depicting a scribe either in the act of sharpening his pen, filling it or writing, on a ground of scrolling vine, divided by applied loop handles flanked by scrolling vine panels, a band of benedictory kufic below, the underside with a central bird roundel, the cover with naskh inscription panels divided by vine roundels, the exterior rim with similar kufic interrupted by the applied handles, the lobed dome with engraved floral panels (tinning later)

A slightly simpler similar inkwell was sold in these Rooms 25 April 1995, lot 214. A larger example of the same group was sold in these Rooms 27 April 1993, lot 120.
