A KHORASSAN BRONZE FIGURE OF A BIRD
NORTH EAST PERSIA, 11TH CENTURY

Of rounded form with pointed tail, the wings as slightly raised drop-shaped panels, the spherical head with protruding finch beak, the legs with three-clawed feet, the breast engraved with an interlace roundel, the wings with a similar motif leading arabesque and arcaded panels, the neck with a beaded necklace, the eyes indicated by moulded concentric circles, hinged upper section of beak and one foot possibly restored

Lot Essay

A bronze bird, dated to the 11th-12th century, in the Museum für Islamische Kunst, Berlin, has the same form with similar plaited decoration on the breast and back (v.
