A TWO-PART CLAY MOULD
EASTERN IRAN OR AFGHANISTAN, 12TH/13TH CENTURY

For casting a bronze lion, each part of with a square face with truncated corners carved with half the figure of a lion passant, its tail over its head, shield-shaped cartouches on its haunches containing scrolling motifs, an inlet tube running to the centre of the body, the reverse of each plain, the sides marked for alignment (one half repaired), together with A GREY SCHIST LEATHERWORKER'S MOULD, Eastern Iran, 12th century, of rectangular form, one side carved with a rectangular panel containing the foliated kufic signature ''amila Muhammad al-Hashimi' within a band of similar kufic, the reverse with four small roundels containing differing floral motifs (intact, fragmentary), 2¼ x 3 3/8in. (8.6 x 5.6cm.)

Lot Essay

The second item in this lot may have been intended for printing an amulet. Apart from the signature the inscription is very difficult to decipher, hindered by peculiar features in the script such as the mim in 'amila.
