A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER BOWL
PERSIA, POSSIBLY HERAT, 16TH CENTURY

Of shallow rounded form with everted lip on stepped spreading foot, the exterior engraved with an extremely fine band of inscription cartouches alternating with quatrefoils on a ground of scrolling arabesques, a band of trefoil and rosette interlaced vine below with lower band of arcading with reciprocal trefoil terminals, foot restored
12 5/8in. (32cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The piece is dated AH..89. It must therefore be dated AH 1089/1678 AD or later.

The inscription is of a particularly good naskh calligraphy. It contains invocations to Muhammad and the twelve imams in the cartouches while the quatrefoils have nasta'liq verses. The arabesque work is of a fine quality, owing much to contemporary manuscript illumination.
