The drum-shaped case surmounted by a seated girl, the enamel dial inscribed Dutertre A Paris, with roman chapters and arabic five minute divisions, the twin train movement stamped Etienne Maxaut, Paris, striking on a bell, supported on a bull with a maiden and a cherub, on a naturalistic base with pierced foot

Lot Essay

The present version is a copy of the model designed in the 1750s. A clock, the case signed ST. GERMAIN, once at Chateau St. Cloud, later moved to the Tuilleries, is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (see H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, page 125, No. 2.8.8).
