Vittorio Caradossi was born in Florence and was active during the late 19th and early 20th Century. He studied under Rivalta at the Beaux-Arts Academy in Florence and established his reputation as a sculptor with a series of female busts exhibited at the Florence Exhibition of 1896. His fame was further augmented by the celebrated monumental statue of the Renaissance artist Desiderio da Settignano, which was exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900. In contrast to his many public sculptures, Caradossi also executed a number of 'genre' figures, of which the present marble is a fine example.
