1879 (16 Sept.)-80 (25 Dec.), the balance of the "Miss Davis" correspondence comprising 17 letters written in Afghanistan, and 12 in India (three prior to the war in September-October 1879, and nine after the war in 1880). The first two letters (with envelopes) from Umballa, India tell of the order to go on service and of the preparations for the campaign, the third written on the march to Afghanistan from Fort Attock. The series of letters from within Afghanistan commence with 12 letters written on the march to Cabul, from Basawal, Jelalabad and Gundamuck, also four letters from Cabul and finally a letter (25.8) from Sherghai, near Ali Musjid. Unfortunately most of the Afghan letters do not have the envelopes remaining or regretfully have had some or all of the stamps torn off. The final nine letters from India, all of which have the original envelopes, come from several regimental bases. All of the letters depict a fascinating day to day account of both Army and civilian life
