3 volumes, 8° (220 x 136mm). 3 engraved titles, 4 anatomical plates, 180 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Hunt, extra-illustrated with two watercolour copies of two of the 8 missing uncoloured plates. (Without 8 uncoloured plates, vol.II with browning to upper margins of about 100pp. of text and their associated plates). Later brown half morocco gilt, spines stamped with crests of the Barclay family, g.e. Provenance: Francis Hubert Barclay (binding, armorial bookplates and associated als tipped into vol.III).

A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE. The two inserted watercolours, by an unidentified hand, appear to have been executed in about 1854: the first is of the Great Auk (and is watermarked 1854), the second of the Black-headed Gull. Mullens & Swann p.305; Zimmer p.315; Nissen IVB 464. (3)
