MOSLEY, Seth Lister (1847-1929). A History of British Birds, their nests, and eggs... with text revised by a fellow of the Zoological Society... Superior Edition. Huddersfield: S.L. Mosley, Beaumont Park Museum, [1881]-1884-1887-[1892].

3 volumes, 8° (212 x 135mm). 276 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Mosley, including 160 of birds and 116 of eggs. Contemporary dark blue half calf gilt, spines with red morocco lettering-pieces.

EXTREMELY SCARCE. The work, issued in parts commencing in 1881 and intended to extend to 5 volumes, was never finished. The title-page to volume 3 and plates 158-159 of the birds were never issued, plate 150-151 of the birds is on a single leaf, and there is a bis plate 109 of the eggs. Vols. 1 and 2 contain Indigenous Land Birds and vol. 3 Indigenous Waders; vols. 4 and 5 were to have contained Indigenous Water Birds and Accidental Visitors. It was apparently published in two editions 'Superior' and 'Ordinary', but the 'Ordinary' edition is yet to be described. Nissen IVB 650; Mullens and Swann p.421. (3)
