Etched title and 56 etched plates by Edward Backhouse, printed on India paper, comprising 23 plates of birds, followed by suites of 33 plates of animals and views, including the double-page plate of tigers, taken from James Backhouse's A Narrative of a visit to the Australian Colonies (1843) and A Narrative of a visit to the Mauritius and South Africa (1844), one by C. Wheeler, 4 by James Backhouse, and the others by Edward Backhouse. Contemporary purple morocco, panelled in gilt and blind, gilt spine, g.e. (hinges very slightly scuffed).

EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION COPY, given by the author to his sister and brother-in-law on the occasion of their marriage in 1847, the upper cover stamped in gilt "Edward Backhouse Junr. to Edward and Emily Mounsey, 1847". A rare album of zoological plates and views by the Quaker natural-history enthusiast, Edward Backhouse. It appears to have been privately printed by the author and distributed within a close circle of relatives and friends. Not in the British Library.
