4° (311 x 248mm). Mounted on guards throughout, 1 p. list of subscribers. Title vignette and illustrations, 55 hand-coloured lithographed plates by Hanhart after J.G.Keulemans. (Some light spotting, about six plates with additional marginal browning.) Contemporary red half morocco, t.e.g. (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Glazebrook of Lancashire (armorial bookplate); J.G.Vanmarle (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. Rare, limited to 250 copies. Scalter was secretary of the Zoological Society for 43 years, and founder and editor of the Ibis. He published synopses of the Jacamars and Puff-birds in 1852 and 1856 respectively. The present work was based on these works with additional material, including examples from the cabinets of F.DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin and originally appeared in seven parts.
