BOSCHINI, Marco (1613-1678). Il Regno Tutto di Candia. Venice: 1651.
2° (315 x 217mm). Engraved title, letterpress dedication leaf, allegorical plate and 60 plates plans and maps (numbered to 61: nos.24 and 25 on one sheet as called for), 9 folding. (3 of the folding plates with repaired tears at their folds, some old dampstaining.) Old speckled calf (spine chipped at head, joints a trifle weak).
FIRST EDITION, first? issue. Boschini, a venetian painter, writer and engraver began work on this survey in 1645, the year the island was invaded by the Turks. When the work was published, the town of Heraklion (Candia) was in the fourth year of what was to become a twenty-two year siege: the topicality of the work and its subsequent popularity throughout the Christian world is unsurprising. Blackmer 171 (incorrect plate count).
