COLOM, Arnold (1623-1668). Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Wereldt. Inhoudende een korte beschrijvinge van alle de bekende Zee-kusten Des Aardtrycks. Amsterdam: [ca. 1658].

2° (560 x 330mm). Letterpress title with arms of the city of Amsterdam, 2pp description, dedication to the Board of the Admiralty, hand-coloured engraved world map and 14 charts (of 16, without the charts of the North Sea and the English Channel), the cartouches, decoration and compass-roses ALL HEIGHTENED IN GOLD, all double-page and printed on thin paper backed on thicker paper, later pencil numberering on the verso of each chart, some charts numbered on the plate at the lower corners. (Very light occasional spotting, lower corners of first three maps slightly damaged, several charts with short clean tears at lower centre-fold.) Contemporary panelled vellum, covers decorated with gilt arms of the Seven Provinces, g.e. (boards slightly bowed, lacking ties).

A fine example of the second edition of Colom's rare Zee-Atlas, probably coloured and heightened in gold especially for the government of the Seven Provinces. The first edition of this important maritime atlas was published with Latin text circa 1654. This second edition has the text in Dutch and the dedication to the Gecommitteerde raden ter Admiraliteit. Arnold Colom, a pioneer in the field of maritime mapping, was the first to assemble this coherent group of charts and publish them as atlas sheets, using a large format suitable for sea use, and in the case of the charts of the oceans, issued on the same scale as the Portuguese and Spanish charts then only available in a restricted form as copies in manuscript or printed on vellum. In this copy the chart of Scandinavian waters and the West Indies are undated, and the Sondt chart is bound in near the back. Koeman A Col.2 (recording only 4 copies Maritime Museum Amsterdam; University Library, Amsterdam; British Library; State Library, Marberg); Shirley 395 (world map).
