Additional engraved allegorical title, 3 folding maps, 1 double-page map (120mm. vertical tear near to fold), 1 folding plate with two views (210mm. horizontal tear) and 175 engraved illustrations by or after Theodore de Bry or Matthaeus Merian. (Some browning.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard (upper cover and spine affected by damp, lower cover with some damage to lower outer corner). Provenance: early unidentified armorial on title; later armorial bookplate.

Third edition. RARE. This work used to be attribited to J.P.Abelin and is divided into three parts. The first is compiled from the works of Acosta, de Laet, Oviedo and Herrera and deals with the natural history and geography of the Americas. It also includes Hans Staden's travels in Brazil. The second concentrates on voyages to the Americas (about 30 accounts from Columbus onwards). The third contains the voyage of Jacques l'Hermite and other more minor voyages to parts of the East Indies and Central America. Nordenskiöld Collection 3, 472; Borba de Moraes (1983) p.372.
