MALTA - [Manuscript plan of Valletta]. Valletta: 2nd April 1822 (with additions to April 1840).

Manuscript town plan of Valletta town and surrounding fortifications, ink and wash on vellum, 500 x 690mm. The plan comprising a detailed outline of the port, harbour and town with streets and churches marked, acts as a deed of ownership of the areas coloured in a blue wash being conceded by the government of Malta to the Royal Navy for use as dockyards, stores, and hospitals, the plan written over with 10 later manuscript annotations dated from 1830 to 1840 detailing additional purchases of property for the Naval dockyards, black ruled border, framed and glazed.

An important and interesting document signed by Sir Thomas Maitland, Vice Admiral G.Moore and H. Wolsey, detailing the early acquisitions of land in Valletta for the use of the British navy in the Mediterranean during the establishment of the first government under British control by Sir Thomas Maitland (1759-1824). Maitland was appointed Governor of Malta in 1813, after it's capture from the French, and the Island was ceded to British control under the Treaty of Paris in 1814. Under Maitland's administration a council of government and legal system were reintroduced. Malta was an important base for the Mediterranean fleet until the 1970's. The later annotations are signed by Vice Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm and various collectors of revenue including N.Nugent and Thomas Briggs.
