Imperial 2° (457 x 307mm). 324 leaves (of 328, fo. 53/6 (one of the leaves blank but for printed headline) supplied in facsimile, and without blank 55/6 and 61/5-6). Xylographic title and approximately 1809 woodcut illustrations by Wohlgemut, Pleydenwurff and Albrecht Dürer, including double-page maps of Europe and the World; initial spaces left blank. (Map of Europe bound at end as folding sheet, tear into one leaf repaired without loss, small wormholes at beginning and end touching some letters, cuts and final map, very light dampstain along edge of Europe map and final few leaves.) 19th-century calf blindstamped in antique style (somewhat worn, covers detached). Provenance: an occasional 16th-century annotation.

FIRST EDITION of the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most lavishly illustrated books of the 15th century, including many city views. The world map derives from Ptolemy and is illustrated along the side and on the reverse with fantastic creatures believed to inhabit the far corners of the world.
