Lot Essay

A variant in gouache on the final work Two Standing Forms against a Palisade from 1949, in the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada. Another larger variant of this subject Two Standing Forms against a Palisade II from 1950 was first exhibited at the Venice Biennale, XXVI, June-Oct. 1952, as no.50.

Sutherland later used the right-hand form in the lower part of The Origins of the Land, commissioned by the Festival of Britain Office in April 1950. The finished work (167½ x 129in.) was installed in the 'Land of Britain' Pavilion and is now in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London.
