Lot Essay

The present work is a set design for the New York Metropolitan Opera's French triple bill which Hockney undertook in 1980. The ballet and two operas were Erik Satie's Parade; Francis Poulenc's Les Mamelles de Tirésias; and Maurice Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges. The triple bill premiered with Hockney's costume designs and sets on 20 February 1981.
