Lot Essay

This is one of thirty pictures with subjects based on the Book of Ecclesiastes that Byam Shaw exhibited at Dowdeswell's in June 1902, his second exhibition at the gallery with which he became so closely associated. It illustrates the well-known legend of the Welsh Prince Llewelyn and his faithful hound Gelert.

Although the inscription suggests that the picture was no.14 in the exhibition and it is listed as no.22 in Cole's monograph, it is actually no.20 in the catalogue.
