Lot Essay

This essay in the manner of Terborch or Metsu is unusual for Rossiter, but suggests that seventeenth-century Dutch painting was an important influence on his more familiar modern genre subjects. The best known example is To Brighton and Back for 3/6 (1859) in the Birmingham City Art Gallery.

According to the catalogue of the International Exhibition of 1871, the picture was painted in 1867.
