AN EXPORT ARMORIAL PLATE
18th century

Decorated in iron-red and blue enamel with a central roundel containing a coat-of-arms, coronet, crest and supporter within an iron-red band of four floral cartouches reserved on a cruciform ground with leaves, below blue enamel floral scroll in the well and blue enamel lotus, hibiscus, and chrysanthemum heads below the foliate rim, chipped 9½in. (23cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The arms are probably those of Van der Werven of Groningen. Cf. J. B. Rietstap, op.cit., vol.II, p.1076
