Lot Essay

Cf.Howard and Ayers, op.cit., vol.I, p.345, col.pl.344 and F. et N. Hervouet et Y. Bruneau, op.cit., p.195, col.pl.9.3 for similar examples and discussions of the subject's treatment, including the unusually strong Chinese influences. See also Hervouet et Bruneau, op.cit., cat.33 for an earlier version which is closer to an engraving by J. Folkema which served as the original, itself after a print by B. Picart, inspired by a painting by C. Coypel.
A similar plate from the Jarras Collection was sold in these Rooms, 13 June 1990, lot 106
