Lot Essay

For what seems to be a variant on another page of the same 1816 Lincolnshire sketchbook see exhibition catalogue, London, Andrew Wyld, Peter de Wint, 1979, no.17, illustrated. Another version, larger and squarer in format, 12½ x 19in. was in the Bacon collection (see exhibition catalogue, Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, Peter de Wint, 1979, no.15, illustrated). A later, unfinished watercolour from much the same viewpoint also belonged to Sir Geoffrey Harmsworth, Bt. (See H. Smith, Peter de Wint, 1982, repr. in colour pl.X as circa 1820). A finished version of circa 1825 is in the Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln (illustrated exhibition catalogue, The Great Age of English Watercolour, London, Royal Academy, 1993, no.115, repr. in colour pl.184).
