A VERY RARE CASED 12-BORE D.B. SELF-PRIMING PELLET-LOCK SPORTING GUN

BY JOSEPH EGG, NO. 1 PICCADILLY, LONDON, NO. 3004, CIRCA 1835

With browned twist barrels signed on the rib, case-hardened patent breeches engraved at the centre and each with screw-in plug, scroll engraved tang incorporating the pellet magazine, the hinged cover engraved with scrollwork and a crest, a ram, serial numbered rounded case-hardened back-action locks each signed 'Joseph Egg Patent' and engraved with scrollwork and pheasants, the hammers each with detachable striker, figured walnut half-stock (butt bruised), chequered grip, scroll engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard engraved with a pointer, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, original brass-mounted ramrod, and traces of original finish: in contemporary relined and refitted mahogany case numbered 2449, with some accessories, the lid with J. Egg trade label for circa 1816-1835, and with flush-fitting carrying handle, London proof marks

Joseph Egg self-priming pellet-lock guns were made in very limited numbers as they were considered dangerous, and are believed to have caused at least one fatal accident. A note in the case gives further details of Joseph Egg's self-priming systems
