AN UNUSUAL 18-BORE AUSTRIAN MIQUELET-LOCK FOWLING-PIECE

CIRCA 1735, ALMOST CERTAINLY VIENNESE

With counterfeit Spanish two-stage barrel stamped with five gold-lined marks at the breech, two of them similar to the marks of Manuel Sutil of Madrid, and with brass spider fore-sight and nearly all of its blued finish, bevelled Spanish lock with engraved cock retaining the original velvet-covered leather wrapper for the flint, and with scroll engraved fence to the cock and pan, the front of the steel engraved 'Muncau', moulded figured walnut full stock carved with scrollwork in low relief, brass mounts engraved with scrolls and strapwork including solid side-plate, fluted butt with cheek-piece, wooden trigger-guard with engraved brass strap, brass escutcheon framed by pierced and engraved scrollwork, surmounted by a coronet, and engraved with a coat-of-arms and plumed helm, two engraved brass barrel bands, the front one retained by a blued spring-catch, horn fore-end cap, original horn-tipped ramrod, and in fine original condition throughout
