Lot Essay

An old type-written note signed by the late owner and sold with this lot reads: 'This pistol was used in the Rebecca Toll Bar Riots when a gang of men disguised as Sisters of Rebecca stormed the Toll Bars and destroyed them. It was in protest against the high charges that were levied.
This pistol was one of a group which hung in the office of the Chief Constable of Bath who presented me with one of the pistols as a kindly gesture due to my Exhibition of antique guns which I displayed at Fortts in Milsom Street about 1935'
