A FINE CASED PAIR OF 19-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK LONG HOLSTER PISTOLS

With lightly belled barrels engraved with foliage and strapwork at the breech, engraved grooved tangs, later foliate engraved flat bevelled locks each with safety-catch, roller, and rainproof pan, figured walnut full stocks (fore-ends cracked) carved with asymmetrical foliage in relief behind the barrel tangs, swelling butts finely inlaid with silver scrolls and dots, full cast and chased silver mounts including trophy of arms side-plates, trigger-guards each with foliate finial, and large butt-caps decorated with strapwork and a grotesque mask in relief, and engraved 'William Palling Esq.r Brownshill 1749', silver ramrod-pipes, and silver-tipped ramrods: in brass-bound lined and fitted mahogany case with accessories including three-way flask covered in red leather, the lid with flush-fitting carrying handle, and circular escutcheon engraved with a crest, a griffin, and the initials HM, Birmingham proof marks, barrelsmith's mark TR, silver maker's mark JA, the locks by William Smart of Gloucester, circa 1820
