Lot Essay

The design of this vase is based on an etching by Jacques Saly (1717-1776). The model is first recorded at Derby in the factory sale held at Christie's in 1773, where an example sold for 17 guineas, and is again recorded in the 1774 Trade Catalogue, see Martin C.F. Mortimer, 'The Antique Taste, The Neo-Classical Vases of Derby in the 1774 Catalogue', The Antique Collector, August 1972, pp. 205-210. It appears to have remained in production until as late as 1790. For the example in the Victoria and Albert Museum see The Burlington Magazine, May 1990, 'Acquisitions in the Victoria and Albert Museum's Department of Ceramics and Glass 1987-89', p. 386, no. VII; also John Twitchett, Derby Porcelain, p. 129, no. 137
