Lot Essay

This dish is an example of the Chinese design most frequently used by the Iznik potters. In each example, however, the design is subtly changed. Over the years 1530-1600 a development can be observed whereby the design becomes further and further removed from the Chinese original. This example retains all the Chinese motifs in the centre, but encloses them within a typically Iznik border. For a discussion of the development of this type see Atasoy and Raby, op. cit. pp.121-124
