Lot Essay

Beadsman, by Weatherbit out of Mendicant by Touchstone, described as 'heavy in the shoulder and light of bone', won the 1858 Epsom Derby, having earlier won the Newmarket Stakes. After the Derby he competed in and won one more race before retiring to stud where he sired Blue Gown, winner of the 1868 Derby, and other good horses including Pero Gomez. Beadsman was owned and trained by Sir Joseph Hawley who was one of the very few people to have owned four Derby winners.
