Lot Essay

The present picture, which has an old attribution to Pyne, relates to a work by J.M.W. Turner in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The composition of the latter is almost identical although in reverse, which raises the possibility that our picture was painted after one of the engravings of Turner's work (see M. Butlin & E. Joll, The Paintings of J.M.W. Turner, 1984, p.207, no. 358, pl.361). Another depiction of St. Michael's Mount attributed to Pyne, with the Mount to the right of centre, was illustrated in The Connoisseur, August 1920, and was listed as being in the collection of the Maharaja of Baroda.
