Lot Essay

The artist for the first stand is from the Yamada family who were among some of the most masterful lacquer artists since the 17th century. The founder of the family was an expert in various styles of lacquering for inro, kobako and upon occasion, lacquered sword ornaments. He had many students and was succeeded by his son and grandson. This artist was probably the last, Jokasai Tsuneo, 1811-1879.
