Decorated in various coloured enamels and gilt with various shaped panels and roundels depicting bijin, a dancer, a painter whose work has come alive, a peacock at a waterfall and landscape scenes, the neck and base decorated with bands of roundels and stylised flowers, the cover with a pierced design of chrysanthemums and a bird

The vase is included amongst other Japanese items on a bill of sale from 1894, when bought by Mrs Leo Olcott from Deakin Bros of San Francisco, accompanied by a passage taken from an 1814 account of the history of satsuma ware, by Jeannie Arnold Olcott.
