Lot Essay

The original grey brick house at Shrubland Park was built for the Rev. John Bacon in 1770-2 by James Paine. Gandy Deering remodelled the building sixty years later in 1830-1832. This watercolour shows Shrubland Park after Sir Charles Barry had further enriched the already classical Italian scheme from 1848-1852.
