Lot Essay

The Queen's bedroom and the Van Dyke room are depicted before the Crace firm's extensive redecoration undertaken in 1855 for the visit of the Emperor Napoleon and the Empress Eugenie. A green and red colour scheme was adopted for both rooms. The furnishings were redesigned in dark green, whilst red was used for the walls and the carpets. The arrangement of the pictures was also altered. (For the Crace redecoration of these rooms see M. Aldrich, The Craces: Royal Decorators (1768-1899), Brighton, 1990, pls.19, 20).
