This is a study for Gunn's celebrated picture in the National Portrait Gallery painted in 1950. Gunn's introduction to royal portraiture came in 1944 with a commission to paint King George VI. The informal setting of Conversation Piece at Royal Lodge, Windsor was suggested by the King (see Sir James Gunn, exhibition catalogue, 1995, no.67).
The core of the Royal Lodge is George IV's picturesque Gothic cottage designed for him by John Nash.
