The arms ar those of Berkeley as born by Earl FitzHardinge, (1786 - 1856). He was the eldest son of the Earl of Berkeley by Mary Cole but it was adjudged by the House of Lords in 1811 that his parents had not been married at his birth and so he did not inherit his father's title. Despite this, he inherited his family's vast Gloucestershire estate, and was created Earl FitzHardinge in the last days of the Melbourne Government in 1841. Having secured Whig seats for all four of his brothers, the Whigs lost the election. He died unmarried and notoriously dissipate in 1856.
