This wardrobe from Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, is likely to have been commissioned in the early 1780's by Sir Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet (d. 1786) from Thomas Chippendale the Younger (d. 1822) who had recently inherited his father's cabinet-making business in St. Martin's Lane. It has been constructed from a German armoire which Lady Winn had inherited from her Swiss father, Baron d'Hervart (d. 1779) and had imported in 1781 together with some '(inlaid) doors belonging to a clothes press' listed in a custom's document. The latter were made into a related wardrobe, which is now at Temple Newsam House, Leeds. Either wardrobe could be the 'walnut cloths chest' listed in the 'Swiss Room' in the 1806 inventory. However, this piece can certainly be identified with the 'large walnut and elm wardrobe' listed in the North West wing in the 1818 inventory
