INDENTAdmiral John Hay (1804-1878), entered the Royal Navy as a First Class Volunteer in H.M.S. Phaeton, 1819; served in the sloop H.M.S. Redwing, 1822 and served in the boats of Redwing during the expedition against the pirates in the West Indies; during these operations he was compelled to subsist for eight days on the provisions for two; joined H.M.S. Prince Regent, Flagship at the Nore, 1827 and the following year was employed in constructing batteries and liasing with the French Army during the siege and capture of Norea Castle, 1828; Lieutenant 1829; appointed First Lieutenant in H.M.S. Pylades, 1840 and served during the operations in China which led to the first and second capture of the city of Canton; (Commended for the ability he displayed during all the operations which led to the first and second capture of the city of Canton -- London Gazette, 1841); particularly distinguished himself in cutting through a raft-boom in the Canton river; commanded the boats from H.M.S. Pylades during the hard fought action with three piratical junks, one of which he suceeded in capturing with the loss of two men killed and eight wounded, 29th. July, 1840; Commander 1841; commanded H.M.S. Prometheus off the coast of Africa, 1844; retired as Rear Admiral 1866; Vice Admiral 1873; Admiral, 1878
