Lot Essay

The golden band of Grecian ribbon-fret that is inlaid into the table-top also features on a pair of card-tables supplied in 1757 by the court cabinet-maker Benjamin Goodison for Holkham Hall, Norfolk (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig. 371). The pattern for the crenellated Grecian fret that embellishes the frieze was published in Edward Hoppus' Gentleman and Builder's Repository, 1737, pl. LVIII
