Lot Essay

N.N. Karazin (1842-1908) was a noted Russian writer and painter. After studying at the Academy of Arts, he took part in Central Asian expeditions recording his experiences in words and paintings. In 1877 he served in the army during the Russo-Turkish War, before returning to Central Asia. Karazin also illustrated the works of Gogol', Turgenev, L.N. Tolstoi and others as well as contributing to the journal Niva. His collected works were published in twenty volumes in 1904-05
