Lot Essay

The scrolled frames and stretchers are designed in the French 'arabesque' style introduced in the 1680s. They relate to a 'tabouret' pattern published by Daniel Marot (d.1752) in his Oeuvres of 1711. A related stool was sold by Brian Jenks, Esq., in these Rooms, 27 June 1985, lot 51, and was subsequently illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, Oxford, 1987, p. 36
